Family Office Definition: Alternative Investment

Alternative Investment definition:  An Alternative Investment is any investment opportunity that is not highly correlated with the stock and bond markets.  By behaving differently than traditional stock and bond markets, alternative investments offer diversification of general market risk (or beta).  Real estate, hedge funds, commodities, and private equity or all examples of alternative investments.  Alternatives are largely utilized by accredited investors with high-net worth or institutional investors, however some are available to non-accredited investors.
