Mortgage Backed Security definition:  Mortgage-backed securities are bonds with cash flow tied to a pool of mortgage loans.  Mortgage-backed securities fall under a class known as asset-backed securities, which are secured with collateral (in this case mortgage loans).   Mortgage-backed securities are a way to invest in real estate, without directly investing in private real estate and managing property.
