Retained Interest definition: With a QPRT, the grantor retains the right to occupy the residence before the trust expires. The grantor has retained interest in the property. With a GRAT or GRUT, the grantor’s retained interest is the right to receive payments from the trust for a specified number of years before the trust expires.
