Family Office Definition: Section 1031 Exchange

Section 1031 Exchange definition:  IRS code section 1031 allows for the exchange of like-kind properties and deferral of capital gains tax. For example, a highly appreciated rental property is sold and the proceeds are used to purchase another property while deferring all capital gains tax owed.  Capital gains tax can be deferred indefinitely until no reinvestment in properties occurs.
